Looks like a shoe tap? heel or toe? Any idea as to age?

Yep, it is a toe tap. Hard to say the age. I have found them in civilwar camps and house sites that go back to the 1850s.

hey Rick it's probably a heel cap. in the old days they used them on the back edge of the heel to keep it from getting worn down. they were also used on dress boots
