Found this today. I wasn't gonna dig it since I verrrrrrrrrrry rarely dig surface signals. However, I've found very old stuff at this park before and I wasn't getting any deep signals, so, out popped this beauty from an inch under the soil - TOPS :) I thought it was a slug at first and was a second away from tossing it in my junk pouch when I saw the lettering. Knew it was old and dialed my buddy. He said it was a reale. Can someone confirm this for me & also let me know if it's genuine or not - a real reale, lol. Also, what would be the approximate date? I'm still shaking. The park I was hunting dates back to the 1700's and I've pulled some oldies like a 2 center, etc., but, never in a million years did I think I'd dig up something like this up. Thanks for your help

P.S. - Exactly the same size as a U.S. dime and about half the thickness.

Re: Is this what I think it is??? Holy s*@t!!!

Looks like a half reale. These were legal in the USA until 1857. That's why most of them are so worn out. They were in circulation for a LONG time.

Sweet!

Genuine .875 Fine Silver 1/2 Reale Coin recovered from the shipwreck El Cazador. On January 11, 1784, the Spanish Brig of War El Cazador set sail from Vera Cruz, Mexico headed for New Orleans, then a Spanish possession. On board she carried 450,000 pesos in silver Reales, a shipment needed to stabilize the Spanish colonial monetary system in North America. Disaster struck, and El Cazador went to the bottom, along with the treasure trove of coins and Spanish hopes for North America. Now you can acquire a piece of history...an authentic 1/2 Reale Silver Coin from El Cazador! Now only $29.99!

Badly toasted. My El Cazador coins are less round than the one posted, or your recently found coin, nynydigger. Hope it is what you hope it is. While I can see what may be part of a date, cannot make out most of it.

Its definitely a colonial Spanish silver half reale from the Mexico City mint.

Thanks for the terrific help & i.d.'s people :headbang: Any way of even guesstimating the age? Hope it is 1700's as it would be my official entry into the 18th century club :hello2:

Well done mate :icon_thumleft:, trouble is , it's so worn you may never discover the true age, welcome to the UK hammered problem :laughing7:. But having said that, from limited experience, I would definitely go mid to late 1700's. That's just from what I've dug, Elizabethan, Jacobean and Carolingian and how they wear, dependent on their use. I know that's a broader date range, but it's an example. They all look a bit like yours, so much so, I thought early 1700's, or earlier at first due to the thinness of the coin, but I have found Victorian sixpence's just as thin, we all have over here . But having said that, I would go for late 1700's, until Cru or SS prove me wrong.

All the best
