Just cracked this one open and it is so pretty. Wondering if it might be some kind of quartz?

Looks grainy like quartzite to me.

Thinking about it, it just might be sandstone. It is grainy. It doesn't brush off like another rock I broke open, it seems a bit harder, but I'll bet that is what it is. Sure do like it though. Thanks so much to both of you for your responses.

Concur with rock, looks like quartzite to me.
If quartzite, the grains will be locked together so tightly that they break trough the grains.
If it is sandstone it will fracture around the grains.

Think Baja nailed it; either sandstone or quartzite.

Well, LOL, once again, I am confused as to what this is. I take back my sandstone thought, ony because I have a peice of sandstone and it kind of crumbles and feels like sand and this one doesn't crumble like that. It's more dense and also harder. Quartzite or granite would be my guess, but like I said, I really have no clue. I just know that I really like it!

Granite is one of the hardest sandstone too. There are many granite sand pits in many countries.

Ok, thank you. It definitely is hard. Looking at that picture, I don't think it's granite. It's probably quartzite or sandstone. I'll keep looking and see what I can find out. Thanks so much

No problem. Not the best picture, but good to hear it helped you. I had a granite piece at hand for a quickie shot. ;)
You magnification will, again, aid you in discriminating sandstone and quartzite.

May I do a humble suggestion of getting a loupe?
Some things to consider:

Buy a triplet loupe, should be corrected and achromatic.
If your still uncertain if this hobby is for you, get a cheaper one from someone with good reputation.
(in case of needed return!)

If your considering getting serious, look into some more expensive models like Bausch and Lomb or the likes.
They have great reputation. I'm thinking of getting myself a better one to.

Turkish, I suppose they where referring to sand which was eroded from granite. :)
I agree though, there is a specific kind of sandstone called arkose - can be quite similar to granite.

Thank you all for your help. I apologize for not getting back sooner, I had computer issues and just got a new laptop that I am trying to figure out. Can't say I am a big fan of Windows 8 yet.
