I found this rock in the mountains in Ireland and I was wondering if anybody has seen material like this elsewhere ? Is it Quartz ? And , what colour do you think it is ? I'm a newbie , so thanks

Context is important. If it was found on a native site, itmay be a blade core . If found in a parking lot with crushed rock...not as likely.

Context was as follows , the image above shows a boulder of probably 1/2 Ton , surrounded by other boulders of 1 , 2 , etc Ton. On the side of one looking quite like this was a relatively thin layer of the rock in question above in the six photos. The rocks were mined in the mountains over 100 years ago. This layer did look unusual , I did not see any more on the sides of other boulders , of which I looked at hundreds. So, yes , I thought I better take some with me, I took out the chisel and hammer and got some.

On the left side of this photo is a concrete footpath.

That is grey Chert. Composed of mainly microcrystalline quartz. Fairly common in the central U.S.

Yes, I agree with a grey chert. Not too common here in Maryland. Our geology is wrong for it to occur nearby.

All rocks are interesting, considering EVERY rock you see is older than ANY light you see from any star (naked eye).

I agree, it looks like Chert.
