This is also posted in Indian Artifacts forum. My friend found this in a farm field that also housed an old 1 room school house. It is a little larger than a golf ball and looks to be stone. We find many clay marbles, and this looks to be solid rock, but very round, as you can see it has a plow mark in it. If its not a marble, what is it. Thanks for any help in id-ing this item...

Being that large, I think it may be a stone used to play some game rather than a marble? Monty

I agree I find many natural stones in the fields which are as round as a marble. I often thought that if they were found by anyone in the past (however far back you wish to go), that they would think it significant enough to pick up and treasure/play with. That's exactly what you did? Peoples minds must not have changed that much in some respects!

I don't know where you found this but if you found it in an area of prehistoric fossils, I would say it may be a Gastrolith.

I have found similar ones in colorado and I was told by the Museum that the Native Americans would heat them over a fire and they would retain heat. From there I was told they could be put in some type of leather pouch for warmth. The ones that I have are about the size of average modern marble and are of a light yellowish color.
