Newbie huh?
Post a better picture if you can...
Don't get hopes to high...

Trez

yeah sorry, that looks like one of those generic molded ones you can buy at novelty stores...I recognize the general shape because I have like, 50,000 of those...
But I'm not exactly an expert in these matters, so maybe I'm wrong/seeing things/out to steal it from you on the cheap
all of which have happened before

Trez I took this to a coin dealer and they said it was real . I will get a second opinion and try to post better pics, new at that to. The dealer said 150.00 but with the hole they would give 50 . They were asking when, where and did I check for more coins .

yeah...don't trust coin dealers

by that I mean,
A) Get a second opinion
B) Don't tell 'em where you found it
C) Check for more

I have no idea what that thing is worth, but given that it's (apparently) a several-hundred-year-old chunk of history, I wouldn't let it go lightly even if it was made of tin

I'm sorry -
But I have to say..............
Here we go again
a cob for 150 ?
Looks like a poured cow patty

New to mding. I posted this on todays finds and someone suggested to post here

If it's authentic, you'll get a lot more on eBay than from your coin dealer.
If it's fake, your offer from the coin dealer (who thinks it's a real reale) is pretty reasonable.

My feelings are that the hole (in this instance) will not detract too much from a decent figure
because the details on this coin are particularly vivid. But the coin is a little too perfect around the edges...
nice and smooth. Which makes me think that it is very likely to be a modern reproduction. It may have been poured
into a mold. I suspect it is most likely a fake because the impressions should have been struck in sharply and yet the edges of all the detailed impressions are soft and rounded. The holes on these coins were often driven through with a nail or spike and yet the hole in yours looks like it was part of the casting process. Take a closer look to see if the hole has ejected material (silver) around the rim.

Again, your photograph needs to be a bit sharper to make a clear determination but my first impression on this coin is that it may be a mass-produced modern reproduction. Even the edge indicates a raised rim instead of a clipped edge... indicative of a poured mold rather than a stamped COB. Post a sharper picture if you can and we'll be able to see the fine details a little better.

I am thinking a pewter replica...but i am no expert
looks kinda thick

Have you had it tested to see if its even silver? Hard to tell 100 percent by your pics but I think you should have sold it. Ask him if he wants to buy any more. :P

I think this is your replica (left)found on Cocoa Beach in 2005. Remember, no two genuine cobs are alike, but these two are identical.

Heres a better pic of another. This "gold" casting even has your hole.

If silver, it appears you have found a silver copy made from a known replica. That $50 sounds pretty good right about now.
