I was digging for fun in my backyard and I picked up a few rocks and I saw gold on one of the them but I'm not sure if this is real a gold peice? WP_20140524_12_27_38_Pro.jpgWP_20140524_12_30_03_Pro.jpgWP_20140524_12_32_38_Pro.jpg

I would venture to guess it will be impossible to tell by the pictures. You can buy a gold test kit from feebay for under 10.00. A jewelry store might also tell you free of charge.

Check the piece in full and shaded light. If the goldish color disappears in the shade (the pictures kind of indicate this) then probably not gold since gold looks like gold in any light.

Too many sharp angular corners also.

I'm voting for real fools gold.. Pyrite of some sort.

The way I'm reading this, there is a questionable gold coloration on the tip of that rock. In the middle picture I sorta see a golden end. You might have to chip that end off and then test a little further. Better would be if we could look at it under stronger magnification.

...Although, here's a sure-fire test! Take a refrigerator magnet (the sheet kind, like often used for advertising). Hold a gold ring (wedding ring will do) on one side to "prime" the magnet. THEN, while holding the ring there, touch the other side of the magnet to the gold on the stone. If it sticks, it certainly must be GOLD!! :headbang: :laughing7:

I'm voting for pyrite !!!! If that's Gold you are on the source .

Quick easy way to find out - tap it with a small hammer. Pyrite will shatter, if gold you might dent it a little, but it will survive.

You can see the angular edges. It's pyrite. Listen to smokeythecat. Easy test...
