I found both parts today at the Spanish-American War camp near my house. Could this be a part of a hat badge? If so, what would the whole badge have looked like? First two pictures are as it came out of the ground. I did a very light cleaning with water and a soft tooth brush but I had to put my wife's brush back before she missed it so I didn't get it cleaned as well as I wanted it.:laughing7: All joking aside this piece is fragile and I didn't want to damage it with a more aggressive cleaning. Does it look like pin attachment spots on the back side? Thanks for any and all help.

Thanks nh. I looked GAR badges up and mine sure looks like them. But, I also found one that is listed as a Civil war/Indian wars Corp of Engineers one. I am not saying it is but I have trouble with a GAR badge being found in the deep south at a later camp site. would the GAR badge date to 1898-99?

Here is a close up of the back showing a single attachment point on each half. It matches a GAR badge I found online but I can't figure out how one would get this far south. Here is a link to a site that shows various badges for the model 1872 hat.

That is a possibility but I think the most logical explanation is a soldier that was encamped here in 1898-99.
