Hi Once Again,

Here is another one that I would like to get id'd if possible. It looks like it might have been part of a hitching post or something similar. The ring used to move freely at one point in time and the "cylinder" has two holes that don't show well in the images where it could have been nailed to something.

Sanborn maps (1893, 1900 and 1906) show a livery two blocks from where this was found along with three hotels two to three blocks and a railroad depot two blocks away. Numerous saloons and boarding houses within 3-5 blocks. It was found at a depth of 8" or so.

Thanks for the help and guesses.
Doug

Yep, looks like a hitching post ring & cap to me, and it should clean up nicely! Breezie

Re: Is this off of a hitching post?

I'm looking at hitching post as to what a horse is tied to, I might be using the wrong word here...assuming a plow hitch?? :dontknow: I have 2 in my living room one all metal and the other wood and about 3 more at the farm. Used to hook a plow on when using a horse/mule/oxen to pull a plow. The part in the picture would be in the middle, in your case the wood rotted away. I can't think of the true name of this "relic", can't find anything on google. If I have to take a picture of it tomorrow I will. :help: :help:

The diameter of the hole is approximately 1 1/4 inches and the inside diameter of the ring is right at 3 inches. The hole is completely round with absolutely no oval shape to it at all. I have looked at every single tree image and whiffletree image that I can find and can't find a match. I am sure you all are right on what it is. I just wish I could find one that matches.

On the picture of Breezie's it is "open" where the "link" is. Mine is closed on both top and bottom.

Re: Is this off of a hitching post?

I'm going to green check this one. Most think it's a single tree and I see no reason to think otherwise. Thanks for all of the help.

Breezie - It is cleaning up very well. The ring is loose too. I have a few more hours of electrolysis to go and then I can call it good.

Thanks again everyone.
