Is this off a boat?

I found this in an area close to the Mississippi river spitting distance from a Civil War Fort. I doubt it is anything, but wanted to know if you all could help me ID it.
The area was underwater in years past.

It looks like a keyhole to me. The older kind before keys with teeth were made. Maybe the plate of the door?
