Here is another knife that I dug out of one of my goodie boxes. Can anyone tell me if this is just another kitchen/butcher's knife? I know NOTHING about old knives of this sort. Any help is appreciated. I am just assuming this, but I think that the handle has been replaced. It looks too crude unless the whole knife is hand made.

Thanks,
Doug

looks like a old home made copy of a " green river sheep skinner" type blade --slight upsweep at the tip

Thanks for the info. Does anyone remember if CVA made a "kit" for a knife similar to this. After reading your post, Ivan, I started doing some looking and I am almost thinking it might be a kit knife that wasn't put together too well.

is possible its a kit knife --it has a skinner type design look to it

however most of kit type knifes, I know of are full tang types (meaning the metal runs the whole lenght of the wooden handle ) --thus I'm leaning toward a homemade knife --plus its a bit crudely made.

My Grandfather used to make knives similar to this one (only nicer). He used old crosscut saw blades to make the blades. He passed away in 1967, and I still run into older folks who have some of the knives he made. Apparently the old saw blades would really hold an edge. My Dad said he would put the saw blade in a vise, and bend it over as far as he could, and hit it with a hammer to snap it in two. I'll bet he didn't wear safety glasses while doing this. :laughing9:
To make a long story short, I'd say it's a homemade knife.

I agree with this answer. My grandmother had a couple of homemade knives that she used regularly. Not pretty but they were sharp. made from saw blade....yep they were.

Going to mark this one solved as a home make knife. Thanks everyone!
