There are phone apps that will take care of this question. I downloaded one last week, free seven day trial or $30 a year. Take a photo of the rock and it identifies it in seconds. I had some jasper collected from Jasper Beach in Maine. It identified it. For a kid this would be a great educational tool plus it creates a database of finds with the photos.
