I'm hesitent to crack it open just yet. Can anyone tell from this photo if it is Jasper, or ...?

Yeah - I think Jasper is a good bet. Its luster say's micro-crystals of silica, which in turn say's agate. I'm thinking with that firey red color that Jasper makes sense. If you do end up whacking it and get conchoidal fractures then that would be another good sign. If you're not familiar with this type of fracturing then google it an look at a picture --- think circular fractures you would see in broken glass.

I've seen obsidian in this color (also silica based). What part of the world are you in? Your location might rule out obsidian.
