Found this at a farm in western Maryland that was site of a Union Camp in CW. What is this and is it CW related?
Found years ago not sure what it’s made of.

Might be an artillery friction primer

Yes, your find is a cannon friction-primer... but it is a modernday semi-imitation of the civil war version. Can't call it a "reproduction" because its specific form did not exist in the civil war era. It has the "split-top tube" form because it is simpler and much cheaper to manufacture than the civil war original form. The photo below shows a group of unfired modernday ones like your fired (used) one. Trust me about this ID, because I served for several years as a Confederate artilleryman on a civil war re-enactor cannon crew.
