How deep does the inside of that go down? Maybe it was mounted to a desk and held pens and pencils. Thats the downside of hunting around old house sites when you find a piece like that you :icon_scratch: your head for hours going thru books and asking. But great find def. looks 19th century indeed. :occasion14:

It is hollow all the way through and is tapered. Fairly thick metal. Looks like brass.

Hi all,I think this may be a flag staff but that is just a guess. I found a few CW bullets not far from the area I dug this but there was also an old home here on the site at one time. Lots of harmonica reeds and lamp parts also found in the area.
Anyone seen one of these before?

If you found lots of harmonica reeds, your site is 99.9% not likely to be Civil War era. Check your lamp parts for patent dates and makers information.

Fellows ,again I am in awe at the knowledge on this site . I have had several things Id'ed over the years here. :notworthy: The house site seems to have relics from that time period. The only coin found there was a 1898 IH so that runs well with the home site which was on a 1916 map.

Very cool!Whiffletreetip_2006carriage_leatherstrap_treasuredepot.jpg

We are all lucky to have the folks that have provided so many ID's for all of us. Thanks to the whole bunch. Tennessee digger
