Katie, I'm not an expert so I won't try to ID but there are some books you should have at home that help . first is Audubons field guide to rocks & minerals. I use that more than any others. second is laymans guide to roadside geology. there are several written for individual states. I would get these to help you. Also see if there are any clubs in your area. or rock shops. Id'ing from pix can be really hard, cuz you can't see the grains that make up the rock. this should help you with most of your id's tho sometimes that's just not enough.
Glad you are getting in to rock hounding. It's an obsession with me. Can't spend big bucks on it, but no matter where I go, I'm looking. My daughter went to Germany & all I wanted was a rock from each country she went to.

Thanks!! I will check into it now! I looked at Barnes/noble for something and came up empty. I asked a last there and she said she didn't have anything like that. Googling :)
it's funny that wherever I go,I find myself looking down for rocks :)

Slag is a by product of metal and/or glass production.
Your slag looks similar to some silica-poor slag produced by a iron production with a furnace and reduction.
(i.e. similar to bloom iron process) That's if we're going on my (limited) experience in bloom iron making.
