Welcome to Tnet.

The seller says it was made between 1891 and 1921, and is undoubtedly basing that assumption on the origin marking requirements of the McKinley Tariff Act of March 1891.

The Act required all goods imported to the U.S. to be marked in English with the country of origin. It was amended in 1914 to require the additional words “Made in…” or an equivalent term, but this was not rigorously enforced until around 1921.

So far, so good, it would seem, but I don't think that's correct. The “I E & C Co.” mark is regarded as early to mid 20th century from an unidentified factory. In her book “Japanese Porcelain 1800-1950”, Nancy Schiffer dates the mark (in green, within a wreath with the words “Japan” and “Hand Painted”) as “1925 and after.”

Although it’s possible that pieces without the required wording “Made in…” slipped through the net in the 1920s (and the requirement could also be fulfilled by an additional adhesive label), simply the word “Japan” became acceptable again in 1952 after the end of occupation. I suspect the pot may be from the early 1950s.

Personally, I wouldn’t rate it higher than about $15
