They are both artifacts. The 1st looks like a preform to me--yet to be completed but could be used for cutting/scraping tasks as is. The 2nd looks like an expediently made tool used for cutting/scraping tasks. Good finds.

Just a quick question. I found both of these within a few feet of each other on the same day in a creek around here in TN. I have tried to find out some information about Native American tribes in this immediate area so I can maybe understand a little better what I'm finding and why. It's hard to put together all the information but I'm still working on it. Can you tell me how common it is to make a find like this?

The tribe names you hear of today are contemporary in consideration of their total 13,000-15,000 years occupation in North America (arguably). All but the most recent are lost to the ages--no written history. I would say it is not uncommon for finds like yours to turn up. TN is artifact rich.

Creeks wander around over time whipping back and forth over the landscape over thousands of years. Lots of camps are on creeks and often the creek would cut over into a camp and dump the artifacts. My guess is that where you found those there are many more and possibly its a place used for thousands of years. Check the banks near and upstream from where you found those and my guess is that there are more.
Have fun! Nice artifacts. The really nice scraper kinda looks like some middle Tn material or up and around Duck River.
What you want are pieces you can place in a time frame (archaic, woodland ,paleo, etc)

Carlasee those are nice ancient artifacts. Not a scraper but likely a preform made to finish later. It could easily have been used to cut just as it is. The uniface item intrigues me. It has much usage and some retouch. While it is impossible to assign them a definitive culture, both hint at technology used very early in the Americas. Cool finds. Keep posting them.
