Last Saturday I was hunting a bluff in a pasture. There is an old homesite a 1/4 mile away dating to the 1850s. A Civil War battle occurred about 1 mile away.
Anyway, at the top of this bluff are huge rocks, like the size of a full size trucks, protruding out and there are carvings in the rock with names. They appear to me to be kid's names and there are ledges where one could imagine this would be a neat place to hang out back in the day. There are also dates carved into the rocks next to the names. Dates are March 26, 1865 and another one May 18, 1897.
I never thought to take photos of the bluff, rocks, and carvings. I am planning to go back and will do this.*
That is the location.
This is what I found directly underneath one of those ledges where the carvings are. It was 6" deep. It appears to be a ring but thought I'd throw it out there to those of you who have been doing this way longer than I.
It's not brass, not copper. It reads a straight nickel on my Garrett Ace 350.
As you can hopefully tell from the photos... it's got an edge on both underneath sides like it's coated or something if that makes sense. No markings at all.
Do you folks think this may be an old lost ring? What would it be made of? Any thoughts are welcome.*
I thank you in advance.
Tim from Missouri

That thing is so much a ring it makes my eyes hurt! Dating it is going to be tough! Take it to the jewelry man find what its made out of and that might help. Right now it looks like it came out of a box of Cracker Jacks. A little closer pictures will help these aces on this web site make it easier for you to identify! You might go back and make another pass with your machine. Could be important history!Good luck!! Hope that baby is made out of solid gold!!!

Looks like a "Po Man's Wedding Band". Some are found in the Low Country of SC and called slave rings. They are rings made of a base metal, copper, brass, or even iron, and then gold plated to look like the real thing. Most come from the early to mid 1800's. Tony
