Hi all, I found this artifact at a site where a dwelling built about 1810 once stood. Found all kinds of coins, pottery sherds, buttons, etc. dating between the late 1700s to mid-1800s nearby.
If it is mounted to a pole with screws it reminds me of a hook. Turn it the other way and the rod could be inserted into another piece of metal and a step (or something) could be screwed into it (brace). Thoughts?

cudamark, thanks for the ID. Will look into it and see if I find anything close.

Just a thought: the holes are staggered. That is sometimes done so that screws through the holes and into wood beneath do not go into the same grain line and split the wood.
Almy, thanks I'll take that into consideration & continue to ponder.

Pot handle as stated by Mark.
Holes were for the rivets.
Dug lots of them in bottle dumps.
