Is this an artillery projectile, or the worlds biggest plumb bob?..It's a round!

Ok, my girlfriend gave me this for my birthday because she knows I love big bullets, and she's just awesome anyway. I think it's part of an artillery projectile, but it has absolutely no markings on it, and I'm stumped. It's 10 1/2 inches long, and 2 1/2 wide at the widest point. The nose seems to be aluminum and the rest is milled steel. There's a threaded plug on the bottom that takes a hex key to remove, but I haven't tried yet. Thanks for looking.

It is a Bullet. It is a US 105mm TPDS-T 724. It is a precursor to the Discarding Sabot we use now. It is the penetrator and does not contain explosives. It did have a tracer element, but it has been cleaned out.

Being a 'Penetrator' could the nose be Depleted Uranium ? :icon_scratch: 8) :o

simeod, The #s you list bring me to a training round with an all steel projectile,

http://www.gd-ots.com/2011 Brochures/105mm M724A1 TPDS-T.pdf

the item pictured is bimetallic, From what I've read could be either Tungsten carbide or depleted uranium... M833 Kinetic Round :dontknow:

"The M833 subprojectile consists of a monobloc Depleted-Uranium (DU, or staballoy) core acting as the penetrator rod, the front part being sheathed in an aluminium windshield"

Nice present! I usually get footware :laughing7:

Thanks for the id! Did a little searching and found a pretty good match.

Just thought I'd put it out there. I'm in the army still, was a scout for 12 and 1/2 years, so worked side by side with tankers most of my career. SILVER tip rounds have always been armor penetrating rounds, for as long as I have been in. You might want to have that checked, tested with a geiger counter for radiation JUST IN CASE it is depleted uranium. Just concerned that you might be exposing yourself to radiation, although low levels.

And get it out of your pocket, at least until you have it checked. You know what I mean?

It's definitely aluminum, so no worries.

Heh, but it would have made any future children so much more interesting ;D

Glad to hear it's safe. I'd rather not play with ordinance at all unless it's shells for my own personal rifle or shotgun. Please tell me you don't have a 105mm recoiless rifle in your backyard....lol.

No. I'm not sure I could justify that to the neighbors.......

maybe beating a dead horse, the link & quote I posted says the real ones are sheathed in aluminum :icon_scratch:

It's definitely aluminum, far to light weight for depleted uranium, and not magnetic at all.
