Found this coin or pendant metal detecting today in the woods. It was 4 inches down and nothing else was in the area to help pinpoint the age of the item. Looks to be copper and it's about the size of a penny, but it's paper thin. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. Sorry for the bad pics, but this one was tough to photograph.

Okay, 87 views and no one knows what it is! It's either rare or the pictures stink! Here's two more pics. A little better, but not perfect. The coin or pendant is pretty toasty, so I don't want to clean it too much. Any ideas?

The pic on the left has what appears to be an Islamic date of 1222; or a Gregorian (our) date of about 1807.
Our '2' appears as a backwards '7' in Islamic.

The other side appears to have the sign of a 'tughra' that would signify an Ottoman coin.
Just guessing, but something that might point you in the right direction.
Don.......
PS: If the "2" turns out to be a "3", then 'our' date would be about 1914. Both the '2' and the '3' written in Islamic look nearly the same (backwards 7).

Don,

I think you have it! There's a very similar Ottoman coin on eBay right now from 1807. The one on eBay looks to be silver, but it appears to be the same design. Great job!

It could be fake, but I doubt if it's an imitation coin. I found a late 1700's dandy button about 100 feet from where I found this coin, so finding a coin from 1807 in this spot wouldn't be out of the question.

Of course, the big question would be why is there an 1807 Ottoman coin buried in the ground in Rhode Island?

You're the man, Don! Thanks for keeping me up until 2:30 AM doing research on the coin! Thank you for your help. I'll mark this one as solved.

Glad I could help.
No doubt that during your research you discovered how the 'tughra' came about and why it was placed on these coins. To me, that story, is the most interesting aspect of the coin; another aspect is being able to date them.
