Is this a syringe?? NEW Photo's

Found this in a privy pit today, was wondering if it is a syringe? The vile is still full of liquid with a crystalline make. The pit dated back to the late 1890's...Just wondering what your thoughts are?? Thanks for any help. jgas

This thing has a crack in it and smells a bit like menthol..or a medicinal smell if that helps. I know, I should not have smelled it but when I was cleaning it I saw that there was a small crack and some of the stuff was crystalizing on the outside. Kinda like battery acid on a worn terminal. What do ya think now??? jgas

Re: Is this a syringe??

Maybe not a syringe. No way to push the product out. Is it still sealed? The crystaline aspect of that is interesting. I don't think I would take it to the crime lab and ask for it to be analized.

I found this discussion on another board about one of those, but its identity was never determined:

It looks like an ampule for injectable drugs of the day,the size makes me think it's veterinarian related? Many different styles were made. HH :icon_thumright:

Re: Is this a syringe??

You know, broken knee, I was thinking that I have seen ampules of phosphoric acid. Similar but no match, especially since they were modern. That is why I was wondering if it was still sealed. If we were having a vote right now, I would vote for ampules, but I don't know that it had to be vet specific. But that explaines the crystals.

Thanks guys, I will take some better photo's of it and post. Maybe a vile of VX or Anthrax! Better not drop it Mr. Cage! :tongue3: Seriously though, I better be careful huh? I have found similar syringe things in pits that had a lot of drug bottles but this particular pit had very little. :dontknow: I will get ya those updated pics. jgas

They didn't need Mrs. Barbary's Tonic, they had the good stuff.

Crystals--kinda like crystals on the outside of a seeping stick of dynamite.

So, did you see pretty colors after you sniffed? I went to the parties but I never inhaled.---Bill

I started out researching hydrometers like the one creskol posted from Digger O'Dell's site. But those involved something called "specific gravities" (whatever that is). :icon_scratch: And they looked different, with a big blob of glass at the base. But then I switched gears and stumbled onto the item below. It too is slightly different, and I'm not sure what it is either, other than it is "medical" related. Check it out and see what you think. Here's the description that came with it ... (plus the website link that shows a lot more pictures). :dontknow:

SBB

DESCRIPTION: Rare original German WW2 medical "HAEMOMETER" set in original velvet padded wooden box with original instructions. Perfect condition, made by SAHLI. Scarce and highly collectable.

Re: Is this a syringe?? NEW Photo's

Here's an example of a typical, vintage "Hydrometer" tube and case. Hopefully it will clarify what I was trying to explain about them having a big blob of glass toward the bottom.

And while we're on the subject, here's the definition of specific gravity. ( I was absent the day they taught this in high school). :icon_scratch:

Specific gravity is the ratio of the density (mass of a unit volume) of a substance to the density (mass of the same unit volume) of a reference substance. Apparent specific gravity is the ratio of the weight of a volume of the substance to the weight of an equal volume of the reference substance. The reference substance is nearly always water for liquids or air for gases.

Temperature and pressure must be specified for both the sample and the reference. Pressure is nearly always 1 atm equal to 101.325 kPa. Temperatures for both sample and reference vary from industry to industry. In British brewing practice the specific gravity as specified above is multiplied by 1000. Specific gravity is commonly used in industry as a simple means of obtaining information about the concentration of solutions of various materials such as brines, sugar solutions (syrups, juices, honeys, brewers wort, must etc.) and acids.

{What's "brewers wort?}

A skin disease, very disfiguring, that brewers get? Can be medicated with Compound B.

Earlier I was thinking along those same lines, but I just wasn't sure. I'm still researching it. But I did find this ...

~ 19th CENTURY BAROMETER ~

Link: http://www.meteormetrics.com/FitzRoyRestoration.htm

:icon_scratch: Pictured below (half full) is the "Storm Glass" part of it :icon_scratch:

The storm glass is filled with 2.5gm of Potassium Nitrate and 2.5 grams of Ammonium Chloride dissolved together in 33ml distilled water. To this solution is carefully added a solution of 10gms of natural Camphor in ethanol.

My buddy found some of those and thought they were medical ampoules because there was a animal vet at that sight { most medical ampoules have an hourglass type shape so tip can be broken off easy} then a another friend said I know what those are. he held his lighter under it . not real close just to warm them and they bubble.

part of christmas bubble lights. Do not use open flame if yours is leaking alcohol a warm light bulb is what was used to heat them.

This is not a positve id But think its what you have. they came in many colors including clear.

Re: Is this a syringe?? NEW Photo's

Wow, all viable solutions to this mystery. Maybe the light bulb thing is right. I have seen other bulbs in our pit digs. Just not sure if this would have been a barometer or the gravity thing. Why would it have been dropped in a privy?? Although I get surprised every time I dig. I can't get past that smell though. It is a sweet/ menthol type smell. Some sort of chemical and surely not water. I think we are close though. I wonder how you could get the fluid checked to see what it is? The search goes on.....Thanks for all the great help on this one. jgas

Re: Is this a syringe?? NEW Photo's

Alcohol boils at a much lower temp than water. Always wanted these but we were too poor. I can't tell on size for sure, but for my 2 cents, I say "DING, ding, ding---winner".
