Is this a Rev. War Sword???? Update -1775-1825 - Update Update-1770's

Don't know much about swords but the only thing I can find that looks close are swords from the Rev. War era. :icon_scratch: They are the only ones I see that match blade style & have the grooves running to the end of the sword like this one.
Thanks,
Pete, :hello:

Re: Is this a Rev. War Sword????

It has the appearance of a Calvary saber as to Revolutionary war sword they have been in use since the Napoleonic wars, without being able to see any date markings it is hard to tell can you fill in some more details? Where did you find it?

Pete
A cursory records search on your property could possibly help you to date your sword, remember wrist breakers where very common in the civil war. An expert might be able to give you more clarity.

Absolutely no crossed-broadswords pin is shown or listed in any of the various books on civil war era US Army-issued and Confederate Army-issued insignia in my relic-reference library. Therefore, in my opinion it is not a US Army-issue or CS Army-issue insignia.

Additional info:
In the decades before the civil war, the US Army did issue an edged weapon known as a Short-Sword to artillerymen. Its purpose was for close-combat defense if the battery was over-run by the enemy ...but, a Short-Sword is not a Broadsword -- whose blade is much longer than a Short-Sword.

Also, issuance of short-swords to artillerymen was made useless by the 1840s/50s arrival of multi-shot pistols on the battlefield. When somebody armed with only a sword comes up against an emeny armed with a 6-shot revolver, the sword guy always loses, and quickly. So, the armies quit wasting money on issuing short-swords to soldiers.

Regimental numbers and Company-letters (as seen on the broadsword-pin) were not included on any US Army-issued insignia until nearly a decade after the end of the civil war. (Yes, Regimental numbers and Company-lettters were issued prior to the 1870s, but they were separate items, not a part of the main insignia's body, as seen on the broadsword-pin.)

Wrong post, bud. I think this reply is meant for the "C" pin with crossed swords topic...

Buckleboy, thank you. I've now removed my post from here and will put it in the "Military Pin" discussion I meant for it to go in. Apparently I didn't have enough coffee this morning before posting.
