Agree that it is a Real, if nickel size most likely a One Real, if so, congrats, not as plentiful as the half real.

Don

Attached a photo I used before for showing the size comparison for 1/2 Real, 1 Real, and a 2 Reale. Basically one is dime sized or smaller, one Nickel size and a 2 Reale is tad bigger than quarter size.

Looks like you have a Real! Thanks, Don, for the size lesson; my only Spanish silver is so worn that I couldn't make a denomination. Now I know it's a half.

CONGRATS.

Thats still on my list!!

Thank you so much for the info on the coin, it is thin also about 4mm thick. It is badly worn on the back, the only word that I can make out appears to be REX. Ill post a picture of it next to a nickel for a size comparison

Awesome find .

Those 1 Reals are often worn smooth.
They (and the 1/2 real) were more used than the larger coins.

Thanks for sharing,
Made my day.
Congrats!

You can make out Spanish King Carlos the fourth on the coin,he was King 1790 to 1808. One and two reales have a 1 and a 2 respectivly on the reverse,as a four has a 4 and an 8 a 8. The half reales have no number. Good job

Thank you everyone for the info... what a surprise to find it. It's one of those coins that you may never find another of. It is badly worn on the revers side, and it does have a funky bend in it. I believe the bend to be from being crudely struck, and that accounts for the off round shape as well. Like I said, the reverse is worn pretty smooth, except for the word REX along the edge where the coin was off center when it was struck.
I think that what amazes me is that the coin itself travelled from spain on a ship, was used by people, and finally was dropped in the years following 1800 (The date on the coin). At the time there were sailing boats, horse or foot travel, river scows, and people were basically all living off the land. HH Michelle

The coin is an odds on favorite that it was minted in Mexico City. :) The vast majority of all Real and Reales found are from Mexico City and not from Spain.

Congrats on the Reale coin and thanks Don in NJ for the ID and history of the coinage. HH, Mike
