is this a platinum?

this was a piece from plate and has a label "FARALOI" with serial numbers on it. this was dug in the philippines and the owner was suspecting that the japanese burried these during WWII. the plate weighs at 45kilos in a regular weighing scale. it was tested under acetylene and torch and some chemicals but it did not melt another strange thing is that if an ice cube is placed on the metal it quickly absorbs it. We went to consult on experts and had a laboratory tests on it and we're still waiting for the results. anyone who has an idea what kind of metal is this? cause some people say that this is a a 60% percent platinum. thank you for your earnest reply

I would hope for your sake that it is 60% platinum!! Thats 99 pounds of 60% platinum alloy?? Thats roughly 1.9 million dollars if my math is correct. Although I'm sure that it would be troy ounces.

45 x 2.2= 99 pounds
99 x 16 = 1584 ounces
1584 x $2000. per oz. (approx) =3,168,000
3,168,000 x 60% = $1,900,800.00

Put it in a safe place if thats what you have.

There are plenty of Platinum test kits out there. Just Google it. But if you have already sent off a sample for testing, just wait. That will be a definitive test and will be sufficient to sell it to a company that buys alloyed Platinum. They will retest it as there is no way to tie the test to your sample but at least you know the test will come back positive. PM me and I'll tell you something you need to know.

Be careful; there are a lot of scammers in the Philipines selling Stainless Steel as Platinum.

@mermiss: yes i really hope that it is a platinum but chances are low.

@chipveres: yes a magnet sticks to it but not strong enough. although when try drop it sounds like a stone when dropped.

@Bioprofessor:well yes definitely we have to wait for the results and i'll update you as soon as we have results.

@bigcypresshunter: i totally agree that there are a lot of scammers in the philippines but were "not" one of them. Recently a lot of people having interest in this metal and tried to buy it for 250k in philippine currency and that is in $6127.00 but the owner did not sell it. And a lot of threats he received that they're going to rob him so definitely he's really scared and reburried that metal again to be safe.

it's a mining corporation lab and they took a small piece for it to analyze. Am not pretty sure where the lab is but a friend of ours is responsible for it and for getting the results for us. I'll post a picture of the whole plate as soon as we get back to the site and post updates. what were doing now is just to analyze this metal first if it has a value before selling it to a company/buyer.

If a magnet sticks to a metal alloy, it contains iron, nickel or cobalt. Some kind of stainless steel seems likely.

That burn mark on the corner would say it's not Platnium. Platnium melts at 3214.9 degrees and will not leave a burn mark. You can heat Plat. White Hot ,let it kool and it's still shiney,no burn marks!!

There is an alloy of Platinum that fits but it's new not old technology:

company that developed the alloy in conjunction with a unit of Belgium-based Umicore SA. The alloy, composed of 58.5 percent platinum and 41.5 percent cobalt and copper, was first imported to the U.S. in 2002.

I dont know why the link wont come up for me, but someone from the Phillipines tried to sell "platinum" to TN members via e-mail a while back but it was proven to be only a good grade of stainless steel. Platinum does not oxidize in air at any temperature, but can be corroded by cyanides, halogens, sulfur, and caustic alkalis. This metal is insoluble in hydrochloric and nitric acid, but does dissolve in the mixture known as aqua regia (forming chloroplatinic acid).

A standard gold and silver test kit contains Nitric Acid and Aqua Regia, so I would presume that any pawn or jewelry shop could test this metal for you.

they have found out that it is tungsten. i don't know for sure if they're telling the truth but yeah i believe so...

I think so, because philippines was invaded by the japanese bringing all the loot from all over asia when they started the worldwar 2. And as they were running away from the advancing allied troops they had burried their loot from different sites here in the philippines and as they burried them along with the prisoners of wars and some their troops and kill them along with the treasure so as to guard the treasure, they also try to put some "signs" (and they all thought this piece of metal accompanied by 4 stones forming as a square like figure and the middle was the plate labeled "FARALOI"). So if ever we have time to go back where the owner of this has dug we'll try ti dig it deeper, maybe or somehow there's a treasure below it.

anyway, a lot of people don't believe that there were no burried treasures in the philippines during the japanese occupation in here but I say it is true since i know a lot of some who had been very wealthy because they have found some of these burried treasures, some POLITICIANS here they got their own wealth from hidden treasures in here, and a lot of japanese were coming back in the philippines with maps... *sigh...

Over the years various people have come to me saying they are selling platinum, how do they do it etc. The source was said to be from a Japanese cargo ship WWII lost off Masbate. As you say there are plenty of scammers and it is very dangerous business, especially in Philippines. As the bars or objects are always large the Specific Gravity can easily be calculated in your back yard. A spring balance, or bathroom scales, water and a bucket that overflows into a larger container. Weigh the water displaced and compare with the dry weight. or simply weigh in air and then weigh in water (archimedes) and eureka you find the Specific Gravity. This will tell you if it is stainless steel or platinum or palladium. Look up Specific Gravity of these on the internet. I have been shown 98% iron and also Titanium . If you want confirmation send a tiny sample (2.5 grams) off to a recognised Analytical laboratory for an XRF scan.. Tell the lab that you want to know approx composition of metals. The best place I know is Sheffield Assay Office, Guardian's Hall, Beulah Road, Hillsborough, Sheffield, S6 2AN, United Kingdom.

If I had any gold or platinum for sale I would take it immediately to the Treasury at Banco de Oro in Manila, (they mint coins there aswell) . They will take their cut and in two days (after they have done their own analysis) you will get your money. The amount your receive will be the proper rate and everything is then done legitamately.
