Looks like a pistol shot (similar era to the musket)

humm they did make blackpowder small game rifles in a pistol type caliber .36 cal.--- so it could be either a .36 cal pistol or .36 cal rilfe round ball type projectile-- plus its was not unheard of to shoot a rabbit / squirrel with a handgun (pistol) long ago.

Way bigger than .36 caliber, and too small to be a musketball. I would say a muzzleloading rifle ball of approximately .50 cal or so. Just measure the ball and that is your caliber half or .50 of an inch is fifty caliber, .36 of an inch is 36 caliber, etc.

Thanks for your responses. I figured some of you civil war relic guys would know since you educated yourselves on the various bullets in that time.
