Found this Sunday while working a church with buckmild1, omnicognic, and Battlecat. It responds to the detector as metal and is slightly magnetic. XLT id says it's a penny. I've compated it to some pix on the net and it looks good to me.

I find a lot of slag from iron smelting furnaces. They look sort of like that and confuse the crap out of my detector.

unfortunately I didn't get to see that when we were out there(man I sure had fun though!) from what you describe, it's certainly possible! ;D

Nickel-iron meteorites tend to be strongly magnetic. Can't tell from the picture what you have, but the real diagnostic test is to slice it and look for the characteristic cross-hatching patterns only meteorites have. You might take your specimen to a local natural museum and have an expert examine it.

Hey Omni,

For some reason I couldn't get that url link to work?

I just sent some samples to "The Meteorite Man" Robert Haag..He will check your rock to see fi it is a meteorite. He is the all time collector and you can got to his site...www.The meteorite man.com There are lots of picture and he has some good information too! Good luck!

Thanks omnicognic. I went to the site and ran the tests. Looks good so far. My rock closely resembles the Achondrite pictured on his site. His is much much bigger than mine.

Probaly not a meteorite looks like a piece of oxidized aluminum ( I see a little brown& white at the tip.

When you cut a metorite and polish it you must use an acid to see the pattern that is only visable in iron meteorites.

An Iron meteorite will read in the Iron field on your detector. a nickel iron meteorite will not look rusty.
