is this a Medieval PickAxe ??

found this today the deus gave a great signal so i dug. thought it was just a lump of iron. then i had a second look and thought this looks old really old.

its very small 6inchs long and the pointy bit is only 3cm thick

any one got any clues how old it is as it seems very small to do any work with it
