Found this next to an old caved in cabin. 2013-05-23 09.23.32.webp2013-05-23 09.23.52.webpThe ring on the bottom unscrews and there is what looks like felt or cotton inside.
 

It kind of looks like what was called a "Trench Lighter." I've only seen one, a long time ago. Turning the wheel to cause a spark to set a heavy cotton wick on fire, only instead of flame it would have a spark or coal that glowed, and a cigarette could be lit without giving out enough light for the sniper to target the light. As I recollect it looked something like you have. Someone else might know better though, like I said it was a long time ago, but I remember it had a wheel and flint like a regular lighter, and a cover that put the coal out when it was closed.
