It is definitely a knife, no way to date it without a mark. My guess is that you found an antique throwing knife:

I can remember having one when I was a kid so I'd say 60's? Throwing knife pretty sure.

I had a couple of those in the late 40's early 50's. If you found it near San Luis Obispo, California, it's probably mine. If you are a kid with a throwing knife, that's what you do, throw it. Bad bounce and it's lost. Oh yeah, it's NOT an antique, that would make me really old. Lets call it a collectible.

See if you can balance the kinfe on your index finger like I'm doing with this boot knife in the picture but without the middle finger helping. If I remember correctly the fulcrum point on your throwing knife is where my index finger is in the picture. If it is close then their ya go:

yea its a throwing knife! I use to have a set of 3! I had them in my car and police took them from me
