I an clueless. i found a local guy that has a ace 250 and a pioneer by bountyhunter both for 200.00 is this a good deal? These would be my first machines

Check the battery connectors and area around for corrosion, thats a real detector killer. Give them a test drive first otherwise it's probably a good deal, but for the other guy.

If both are in working order and clean (no corrosion, etc), then absolutely it is a good deal. Take them out for a test drive... if he is reluctant then think twice. If he says yes, have him show you how to use them while you are out. Take some pocket change with you as test coins, and if you have some foil and pulltabs take that along as well.
