the backmarks like "extra color" and such are sort of "puffing" or touting of the buttons "quality" commonly done in the early 1800 era -- in a effort to get folks to buy their button over anothers --many "puff" terms were used -- double gilt --trible gilt --(gilt is a type of plating process that makes the button look good / golden ) --extra color or colour *-- flat buttons with these terms are almodt akways thought of as early 1800's era -- many were imported from britian . -- its size would depend upon its intended use -- a smaller one might be a cuff button indeed.
