Is this a Civil war button ? if so how old ? it says waterbury button .co.*.conn.* .... : I went in to the woods but the mosquito's and the trash were getting to me so I started to head out and peep ! Ok 1 more dig .... looks like a old navy button but ...I don't know I think im going back there lol thank you for looking you all rock... you can click on my pics up to 3 times to magnify them:laughing7:

I'm always nervous about responding to navy buttons. But I did look (quickly) thru my button books. It would appear your button would date from around the 1850s as the eagle looking left is rare. As to the backmark, I found it in my backmark book but it wasn't clear about the time period that it was used. Someone else will come along and straighten out my mess, I hope. Regards.

This is a just a quick "shot from the hip", as I'm not looking in any reference at the moment. However, I'm thinking the particular backmark as shown is post-ACW.

Sorry, but no, it's not civil war era... it is World War 2 and later. In 1941, the US navy's eagle emblem was changed to having the eagle look toward the viewer's left (which means, the eagle looks toward HIS right side). See info in the Albert button-book on page 102.
