Could use help on this one. Found at an early 1800's cellar hole. At first I thought it might be from furniture, but does not have the right holes to attach it. Then I noticed the design which appears to be a belt or sling. Note that it has a buckle at about 10:00 and at the top is a design that appears to have two wings. Once I saw this I was wondering if it was some kind of box plate. It is made of thin pressed brass and measures three inches by about two inches. Would appreciate any input. Thanks...Lance

I included a picture of the reverse. You can see some of the detail better...Lance

Re: Is this a box or belt plate?

Hard to tell without seeing the back... same sizes sometimes. Although... if it's a medical plate... I'm sure it's belt... not ammo box.

I do however also think it's a "state" plate and not a medical serpent... What state has the circled "belt" depicted on CW stuff? I don't remember...

US or CS Buckle, Stamped sheet brass, lead backed with brass hooks embedded in the lead. Buckles have three prongs in the back for attatching to the belt.

US or CS Box Plate, Stamped sheet brass, lead backed with brass hooks embedded in the lead. Box plates have two brass loops embedded in the lead to attach to the Cartridge box .

Anyone? Am I wrong?

Hey Jim. There is nothing on the back. Any lead has long ago fallen away leaving just the thin brass shell. Thanks for the help...Lance
