I've found a hole.

a hole my shovel sinks into under its own weight. or with a little bit of persuasion.

its right along the property line on a lot a house from the mid 1800's used to stand until recently, i removed several old rocks and bricks from the top of the hole and started digging up loads of rib bones from sheep and cattle, some bits of skull, neck/spine and joint ends from stock pots i assume, but only one broken bottle so far, an old torpedo bottom, and half of a green and white china noodle/soup bowl. I got about 3 feet down before the sun went down, filled everything back in, left the bones along the fence line in case anyone wanted them, i thought they were pretty neat.

I only have a little detecting shovel, i'm working overseas away from home, i essentially have nobody to help me, and I only have one sunday off until i leave.

should I try to dig this hole out? Or would my efforts on my last day be better suited metal detecting the beach and house lot? I dont know how far I may have to go down either, and I dont have any buckets, but i might be able to cabbage some waste oil containers from work.

anyone in the port fairy victoria area in australia want to dig a hole?

Hello tlowery,

You'll always wonder about this hole, unless you dig it... Torpedo or Hamilton bits are good signs, as are the bones and pottery shards. Was there ash? Any signs of sidewalls or liner? Location sounds right...

I've no experience in Australia, but there is a good group of diggers and an excellent bottle forum: Australian Antique Bottle Forum

You might join and make a post there. Those lads would love to hear from you. Say "Hi" to John and the boys for me.

I would dig it. buy or borrow a shovel. & don't forget to post pics

If I didnt dig it ,I would always regret it !!!! DIG IT OUT !!!! Good luck!

I agree! Dig it or you will be forever wondering what you left behind. Good luck and post some photos.

oh, and almost all of the shards on my finds page are from the house lot surrounding this hole, i did find pockets of ash, not able to tell where the hole sides were at that point in time.

I made an account, perusing their forum now
