Is there anyway to find out who made this

I found this near an old cellar hole from the thirties, I know its a lock of some sort but any other info about it would be nice. There is some sort of maker stamp on the back, it looks like a seven and it's made of brass.

Viking, Your item looks to be a very fancy escutcheon plate for a piece of furniture; more than like a desk, secretary, chest,etc. that would have a 'locking' drawer. The 2 protruding pieces held the 'drop' handle to open the drawer. Lifting the handle shows the key hole, which opened with some type of barrel/skeleton type key. Below is a pic of one similar except the key hole is at the top.

After seeing the back, I'm convinced it is a hardware lock. It could have come off of a steamer trunk as well as a piece of furniture that had a locking drawer.

And yes Dizzydigger. But my dad disappeared with it and used a brass wire brush to clean it without my knowledge. I know that was a mistake but I didn't want to yell at him since he was trying to do something nice. Hope it did not damage it to much.
