Photograde is an excellent source for grading coins. The author is very well thought of in the industry. Gives a photo with description to help with grading. Better than just words trying to describe a grade such as you would find in the Red Book and other sources. As with all the books, it's just a guide.

ANA grading standards is a much better grading book... I have both..

so, if I buy coins that are "photograded" as being brilliant uncirculated, they should turn out to be MS63 ? Do you think it would be a good idea to send some of the coins off to pcgs or anac to have them graded and slabbed? Do you have an idea of what they charge for the grading at either site? Thanx much for the replies, I'm a neub , and really like the coins and the history associated with them. Peace, out.

Photograde book only goes up to almost uncirculated...(AU) Uncirculated lowest grade is MS60 (mint state) and goes to MS70 perfect coin without defects..
Get the ana grading standard book and compare the pictures to the coin and use a small loupe to magnify the coin to look for scratches nicks and polish marks..
pcgs is about 30 per coin anac is about 15 not sure about ngc

Photograde is good for circulated coins only. If you want to grade MS (Mint-State or uncirculated) coins you really should get the Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States Coins (6th Edition).
