Today I went to a garage sale in a small town in Georgia that has a rich pre civil war and post civil war history. The address was at a post civil war plantation home that the owner said was built in 1870. It had been restored to its glory days and was beautiful. Anyway when I got out of my truck first thing I see is a detector he has for sale. My conversation with the owner went to detecting quick. I asked him had he ever hunted his yard. His answer was yes and then he said let me show you a couple of things I have found. We go inside this beautiful home and he goes to a cabinet and comes out with what looks like a gold egg. He said he had found it with his detector in his yard. He even later showed me the location where he found it. He didn't have a clue to what it was and neither did I. It's a non furious metal that's gold plated. I thought maybe a child's toy but it's mighty heavy for a toy. The other object is a solid round metal ball. Is very heavy and has a square hole all the way through. Has anyone got a clue about what these two items may be?

The round piece looks like the weight from a pressure relief valve? Steam engine or stationary boiler.

Round object looks like a headache ball from a small crane or hoist or it could be a weight like the previous poster said.

Not sure but here is a link to a webpage with a slave weight. Looks very similar. https://sagaciousnewsnetwork.com/slave-code-the-secrets-hidden-in-the-english-language/

Very interesting finds! If they were mine, I would start with checking out the two leads given above. Congratulations!

Brass darning egg. I have a bunch different sizes somewhere in the attic. Mine came across the Oregon Trail in the late 1860s, and from family in both England and Denmark over the past 30 years. A few have flat spots so they will not roll off the sewing table. A few have handles.

Today, most similar brass items are simply paperweights.

Time for more coffee.

Edit: Please let me add a bit of information that I had forgotten. There are similar items that are used as weights. Typically they will have a flat side with a number and possibly a unit type. An example would be the word or digit “8”, and word or abbreviation “ounce” for 8 ounces. Usually I see cylinders, cubes, and spheres for weights, but I may have seen egg shapes weights several decades ago somewhere in Europe.
