Is it me, or has it been impossible to find hand rolled halves out there lately?

That's definitely what I am observing.....you have to be in the right place at the right time.

Tellers frequently tell me that someone came in the previous day and bought all of their halves. And the large quantities of halves that do pop up are most often someone else's dumps.

Even so, I still get them. I once came across two rolls with "Silver Kennedy" written on them that were solid 40%.

I've not been looking much for hand rolls, but did take a trip 3 week ago- hit a few Banks along the way got lots of clad, but 2 of them had 9 & 2 Rolls respectively that we were mostly Silver for a total of 175 Silvers of which 4 were %90 and one of that 4 was a Ben too. My Boxes have been dismal and depressing for months, running at %50 skunk and most of rest 1 or 2 Silvers.

One of the banks that I had gotten silver out of 9 out of 10 tries that always had a few rolls of halves now tell me they have no less than 5 people a day in there asking for halves. 2 of these people are there every day when they open just to ask for halves. Last month i didnt even do a single road trip but got lucky when a teller called me to say someone turned in 850$ worth of halves. All but 2 rolls were marked with dates. The 2 unmarked rolls were solid 40 percent, and one dated roll was 15 66s 67s 68s. While i was at the bank picking them up there was a guy in line 2 tellers down asking for "any half dollars you have".

My guess is as the boxes havent been doing incredibly for most of us this year the posts of all the pretty road trips are getting lots of attention and bringing out more and more folks searching. 2 months ago i never got skunked on a road trip and could always find a couple K in halves to search. This last 3 road trips i took I found 10 to 12$ in loose halves total in a days driving. Word is out around here for sure.

scary
and
not too favorable for me

maybe that's why it's horrible in my area
other crh'rs killing the area

will keep trying

I can still find hand rolls of halves, but they are 99% of the time dumps. I have learned what banks in my area will have them because local CRHers dump at those banks. Sometimes out of several hundred in dumps a good "virgin" roll from a non CRHer will get into the mix, but not too often.

I think that all the CRHing activity has educated all but the most stupid tellers about the value of silver halves. They gotta wonder "what are all these people wanting with half dollars?". After a quick google search they would see the value if they looked. Once they know they might decide to cherry pick for themselves.

All of the above is why boxes are still better than hand rolls in my area if you look at time spent searching/silver coins found. At least the machine collected coins from banks that don't let you buy the collection bag will still make their way into the Brinks boxes, etc. It is easier for me to pick up a couple of boxes than to drive all over town looking for rolls. But the finds in the boxes here are no where near good anymore.

I still always ask for hand rolls when I am at a bank for "legitimate" banking purposes though and do occasionally get a few keepers.

I totally agree with Jim4silver. Just two years ago I would always get hand rolled halves at banks. However, in the past year things are drying up and everywhere I go I usually get someones "dumps".
Each of my usual banks tell me that there are many people per week that come in asking for half dollar coins. Also some of the banks have been ordering boxes for CRHers. Thus I pick and chose what areas or banks I frequent. I also have established some good teller relationships and they save loose and customer rolled halves for me. Even yesterday one of my nice tellers called to let me know that someone just deposited some one dollar silver certificates with her and "if I wanted them". I drove down and got them all. Eighteen of them. Most were worn, but some still in good shape. Also, had an incident about two weeks ago where I walked in to one of my usual stops and the teller had just gotten three rolls of halves an hour earlier that produced thirteen 40%ers. So you never know. You just have to be "next in line" or plain lucky. Good luck everyone.

it is a bit harder to find them lately. All my banks keep asking me what the deal with halves is, and say that they get asked like 2 or 3 times a day for them.

very true, but then again, i could never find hand rolled rolls of half dollars, except 1-3 at a few banks, and ONE time i got $100 dollars in them...only 1-3 bank in my area even accepts them/desributes them to customers, and the main one i use would be Ent Federal CU, and i can only locate 4-6 branches in my area, without driving for ever. i dont drive far to pick up, or i dont do road trips unless already needing to go 4 something else, cuz the finds in my part of the country are very minimal, not worth the time, gas, & wear and tare. heck, cant even find bank rolled halvees w/o ordering, which yet again only the Ent Fed. CU is willing to do for me w/o fees, and w/o being total butt-heads :laughing9:
