Hello guys. I find myself stumped today. I have found a ringa, and after cleaning it, I saw the beautiful shine of yellow. My question for you fine folks is, would the pawn shops be able to tell if this is real? I have heard that the rubbing on a stone and using chemicals does not work on very old gold. Would you guys have any suggestions? I appreciate you all in advance.

The acid test works on all gold.

No karat mark, probably not gold unless it is REALLY old - medieval or older.

Show us a picture of any marks on the inside. No marks is NOT a good sign.

pawn shop. Jimbob

This is an out in left field comment... but if you know someone in humble, tx with a Mass spectrometer, you can find out exactly what it is. A quick google search shows; Humble Geochemical Services on 218 Higgins Street, Humble, TX has one.

There are rings that are custom made made of melted gold jewelry that have no markings. I know of one such ring that is HUGE at least 1 1/2 ounces.

You need to have it tested. A pawn shop will do it for free.

If you had to clean it in order to see the true color then it probably not gold. Gold and Silver usually come out of the ground without needing to clean them other then to wipe the dirt off of them.

Just hold the ring in the blue part of the flame from your lighter while looking at the resulting "evil vapours" as you are wearing your polarized 3D glasses.

If the color looks "crazy", then you have discovered true metal!

Lol.. i had a "gold" ring made in Cairo about twenty years ago. They shipped it to me in the mail, and when I opened it there was no marks and it looked like brass. About 10 years ago, I did some lab work at Oak ridge national labs. I brought the ring with me and we put it in the mass spectrometer. Turns out it was a smidgen under 24k ;D

Definately take it to a jeweler. I had 2 different pawn shops tell me they didnt think my 20.4 gram bangle was gold. I had 2 jewelers confirm that it was.

What did you use to clean it?

As someone else said, if you had to clean it in order to see a "gold" color, it's not likely not gold.
Could be bronze or brass.

Gold and silver come out of the ground pretty much the same way they go into the ground.
Sometimes it depends on the soils, but not too often...a gold coin that's been in the ground for over 4000 years will still show that it's gold (in most cases)

I don't want to rain on your parade, but you could still take it to a pawn shop, they "should" tell you what it's made of...just tell them you're not interested in selling it. If the person is a good business man, they'll let ya know
