Is it colonial?

I found this yesterday at a site that has coughed up several colonial coins and some relics of the same period. I know this land has been inconstant use since the late 1800's as well (maybe earlier) so it's possible it could be from a later period too. I think this is part of a horse bridal but I'd like to know for sure. Can anyone ID it for me? I had it posted in the "todays finds" section but didn't get any answers.

Because of the crossbar on the reverse, I cant imagine it fitting over anything. I think it resembles a large horse rosette

As we say Horse Boss. :)

Yeah, I'm now pretty convinced that it is a horse rosette. Now if I could just narrow down the age of it....
It was found near some colonial coins that were dated from the 1690's thru 1730's. I'd like to think this was from that general time period too but I just don't know much about these type of items.
