Think this might be a discoidal? I am in NE Missouri and found this piece in a creek that comes out of a large cave. I have found several artifacts in this creek. I think this material is what I've always called "brown creek chert". Both sides of this stone have been chipped, you can see where large flakes have been removed leaving it concave on both sides with a ring of cortex around the outer edges. It has some fossil inclusions in it and is cracked.

Here is a view of each side and one edge. If ya need better pics let me know.

lol....

Well, I've been hanging around this board for a couple years and have noticed that if ya get 17 views and no comments it means one of two things....1: no one knows for sure what it is or 2: everyone knows it's NOT what the poster thinks it is...

So....

This must not be a discoidal?? One thing for sure is I'm still learning here and your opinions and expertise CANT offend me so don't be afraid to speak up and tell me what ya think.

Looks like a geofact to me, echnoids present.Looks like a bigger fossil popped out of the oneside would love to know what that was.Nice piece!

Like SRV said it could have been a hammer stone or it could have been a chert cobble that some ancient knapper cracked open to see the material on the inside, I see a lot of those in some creeks I hunt.

I usually pick up stuff like that and study the material, it can give you some ideas of what material the ancients might have used.

Archer I do not know what the heck it is but it's cool. lol. Not sure what was going on with it. If it was worked or just cracked in half to check out the material like Jousha said or what?? I do not think they were making a discoidal maybe just out looking for material. Cool looking whatever it is.
You ready for bow? I am going to check my cams tomorrow. cya

Thanks for the comments folks...when I found it I just picked it up and brought it home because it was COOL. The more I looked at it the more I thought it looked like material had been taken off of both sides with a purpose but I'd sure open to the possibility that it just naturally occured that way.

I'm WAY ready for archery season TN...ours starts Sept 15th. Good luck to ya!!

Ours opens the 25th. Going to be hot I bet. Might have to ease down the creeks in the bottom of the hollows late afternoon and catch something coming to water.
: ). Every creek artifact hunt I have done this summer I have blown deer out.
Be safe !
