Is it a coin? If so any idea what it is?

Found this coin today about 6 inches down and used to be covered by a swamp.

On my side i can kind of make out a "18" maybe?? Also i seem to be able to see traces of copper

If its copper it looks about the right size to be a large cent

Any input on how or if i should try and clean it?

Boil some hydrogen peroxide and drop it in than in a couple minuets use a tooth pick and rub it hard to get that outside layer off. You might have to do this 3 or more times to get it were you can see what it is.
