IRS Badge

Hello, my husband bought what appears to be an old Internal Revenue Service badge. Its made of lead and says 179-8 investigator and alcohol and tobacco tax at the bottom. We had no idea where to find out if its valuable or not, i've tried searching old irs badges on the internet but to no avail. Its just unusual for it to be made of lead rather than silver or gold like so many law badges. Please help!

IRS has nothing to do with alchol and tobacco (and firearms).

Actually, both the IRS and ATF are divisions of the Dept. of the Treasury, and in Federal Law Enforcement Badges by Kenneth W. Lucas, Sr. there is an illustration of a badge with the following:

Investigator / • U. S. Treasury • / U. S. _(#)_ / Internal Revenue Service / Alcohol and Tobacco Tax

It's not a lead badge, of course, nor are any of the genuine federal badges. However, the badge which Kathleen's husband bought might be a replica or cast of such a badge.

The front does seem to be the same design as that of the badge shown in the book Federal Law Enforcement Badges , asmentioned in Reply #5 above. Judging from the thickness and the appearance of the back, I'd guess that someone made a lead casting in a mold taken from a genuine badge.
