Very new to this! Found in my backyard, about 5 or 6 inches down, in a historic town in Louisiana. Iron with no markings. Any idea what it is and what time period? We're so curious and I'm having a hard time resisting the urge to turn up my entire yard this afternoon to see what else I can find.

Do it! Use your MD though. I wouldn't go crazy on your yard like that unless you find the trash pit or privy.

Sounds like we've found a trash pit then! Found two axe heads, a horseshoe and other various things in one spot yesterday. Tons of nails, bottles and metal strips. Found some small printing plates a few months ago. It's just now warm enough for me to get outside with my son and dig some more. I live downtown in a town founded in the early 1700s and I can't swing the detector without it beeping like crazy. Would love to know what time period I'm digging.

Post a some photos of the items you have recovered and continue to recover from the possible "trash pit" and maybe one if not more of these items will help with dating the pit.

Here are a few of the interesting things I dug yesterday. I also dug a broken Kellogg's bottle. And (no exaggeration) two gardening buckets of metals strips and pieces.

When you say you dug a Kellogg's bottle, can you be more specific, is it a milk bottle or does it look to be a possible medicine bottle?

Kellogg's cereal company did have some milk bottles advertising their cereals, and then there are some Kellogg apothecary bottles that would be much older.

I like the glass inkwell also, too bad it has what seems to be a crack in it(?) but at least it still in one piece!!

From what I could find, it was a vegetable tonic bottle. The very top was broken, but I was still excited. Thought it might help with the dating. There is a crack in the ink well, but not a bad find for a beginner. :)

New finds. Same hole as the big axe head. Same area of the yard as the original questionable piece. Bottle is 5 1/2 inches tall and has some kind of top on it.

as to your original photo I think you have a very early cheese grater...hooked on top of bowl...this is close and early 1800s..grater.jpg

Looks like you found an ancient sand scoop ---- no I'm just trying to be funny. The horse shoe is for a hind foot, has a trailer which is a mild corrective feature, probably trying to keep a buggy horse from interfering (hitting the opposite leg) when it was trotting. Any imperfection a horse has in the way it travels is magnified at a trot, and buggy horses trot a lot.

A cheese grater?!?! What?! I've searched through Civil War era lanterns, stoves, printing presses... blah blah. A cheese grater?! HA! How funny. I never would've thought of that. Thank you!

You know, I found the original piece by my son's sandbox, so maybe that's not so farfetched, BosnMate. :) Thank you for the info on the horseshoe. That's very interesting. Now every time the horse carriages roll by my house, I'll be extra delighted.

Thank you for your kindness. I'm hooked and can't wait to see what else I can find this week.
