Detector(s) used
Equinox 800
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Out picking up loose change and dodads along a well-traveled trail when my 800 started to sing like a caffeinated boy's choir. So I grabbed my digging tool and went to work. About 2 hours later and in the full length (+) of my arm I finally hit what seems to be a twisted metal rod, which is strongly attracted to my magnet.

I was able to determine with my detector that the rod is most likely about 4'-6' long.

I didn't have the tools or time to dig a trench for the full extraction.

This is one of those experiences when I just didn't know when to stop digging - the 800 said something was definitely there and ringing in the 20s, but digging 36"-48" down was testing my resolve. I'm still new at this hobby and this is the 2nd time when I seemed to be digging forever ... at least this time I hit the target.

So those of you with a bit of experience. Any clue about this being anything but a twisted iron rod? Would you return with a bigger shovel and plenty of time to make the extraction?

***I did fill in the hole and noted the grid coord***

I'd have to say that it's a Leaveright..leaver 'er right where you found it.

Could be a "Leaveright" but you'll always wonder what it is/was. So no harm to return and dig it up and see what it is or isn't, and not having that nagging feeling of what if.......

I would dig it up just to satisfy my curiosity.

I must be getting old...when it comes to digging a 6' trench
to pull out a piece of twisted iron, I'm just not that curious anymore..digging_zpsefcf9a69.gif

The last long blasting iron signal I dug was a complete civil war sword and scabbard. so keep digging at least to take a look at what it is.
What you have looks like lightning rod to me , so there could be an old house site near by. download (4).jpg

Been thinkin' about this twisted bit of iron. In retrospect, since it's ScriptRhythm's
shoulders and back that will be doing the digging, I say have at it. 8-)

I have no idea what kind of terrain you're in; have there ever been
power lines near there? Was there any logging in the area?

People only twist iron of that size for ornamental reasons. Fence or perhaps hearth structures or andirons.

I'd have to have it out just to see what it was.

It's in a low lying area that's not too far from a lake. I doubt if there was serious logging in this area and no power lines. The layer in which this is found is somewhat sandy, which makes me think this might have been lake bottom at some point.

My guess is that it is an ancient petrified Twizzler.

Solved ... it's a Leaveright.

Was told by a passerby that this was the location of a farmhouse once upon a time.

Looks like it was a wrought iron gate or screen door. Heck if nothing else your curiosity was sated and you got some good exercise.

No doubt, I got a great workout. Last time I dug a trench I was 30 years younger and at an Army school (PLDC) at Ft Bliss.

What's interesting about this iron piece (for myself) is that it looks just like the iron railing on the front porch of my childhood home.
