Gentlemen, I found this today on a new permission. The site is a circa 1800 former farm and homestead site in New Jersey.

I found it in the front yard about 100' off the road and 10' from a tree.

Details:

6" underground
4" x 5" in size
all iron
there are what appear to be small teeth along the ridges on the back.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would say that's a really rusted horse brush....a curry comb.

Thanks. I think you are right on. I did a curry comb search and saw something very similar.

For anybody here who doesn't already know... the horse curry-comb found by mburnsgps originally looked a lot like what is shown in the photo below and also the scan from a 1902 horsegear catalog, below. That style is very difficult to accurately time-date (unless there is a visible maker's-marking), because they've been around since before the civil war.
