Iron plate about 100x50 cm on a british WWII trench

Any idea about this plate? Found on a british trench on Salerno battlefield. The holes was made from bulletts or sharpnel.

Could be, I suppose. But the bracing on the underside indicates it was intended to support pretty good weight.

Being old I'd expect it to be built strong enough to to do the job, unlike todays cheap junk that folds when items are placed on them.
