Iron piece with tiny brass triangle

This came out of a house that was burned during the Civil War. The landowner's son is digging out the foundation and this was the most interesting piece. Any ideas?? On one of the iron pieces going through it there is a tiny brass triangle about 1/4" on each side.. Total length is about 3 1/2"
